Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)
“David” (1623-1624)
Baroque
Marble
Located in the Galleria Borghese, Rome, Italy
The sculpture depicts the religious figure David as he is about to throw the stone that will bring down Goliath.
Compared to earlier works on the same theme (most notably Michelangelo’s David), the sculpture broke new ground in its implied movement and its psychological intensity.
